PT Bank Tabungan Pensiunan Nasional Tbk (BTPN) has been ranked among the top 50 of Fortune Magazine’s list of companies that are doing well in solving society’s biggest problems as well as making profits. In the Fortune’s Change the World issue that is released on September 2016, BTPN through BTPN Wow! is considered successful in helping unbanked communities and playing an important role in financial inclusion in Indonesia.

According to Fortune, Indonesia is home to around 6% of the world’s unbanked population, and only 20% of the country’s 250 million people have access to a bank account. Through BTPN Wow!, BTPN that is established in 1958, is committed to provide financial access and services to people that do not have bank accounts. BTPN Wow! itself is a banking service that use cellphones technology and is supported by agent networks to make banking transactions including account opening and cash deposits/withdrawals.

BTPN Wow! can be accessed using all GSM cellphones (not necessarily smartphone) and its unstructured supplementary services data (USSD) technology enables people to transact anywhere even in the remote areas with a weak signal. BTPN Wow! uses agents to extend its reach so that people can open bank accounts and deposit/withdraw cash.

From its launch in March 2015 until June 2016, BTPN Wow! has more than 700,000 customers and 35,000 agents. To extend its coverage, BTPN Wow! continues to expand and cooperate with various parties, such as cooperating with Telkomsel, the largest mobile operator in Indonesia, in developing interconnected financial services between BTPN Wow! and Telkomsel’s mobile money service TCASH.

Accoding to Deloitte, a multinational financial services consultant, a 20% increase in financial inclusion could lead to an additional 1.7 million new jobs in Indonesia. Hence the emergence of branchless banking services including BTPN Wow! will certainly benefit Indonesia. As for BTPN, it is an opportunity and a call to “do well by doing good” – the BTPN’s business philosophy.
